Self-made water filter
Not each Outdoorer have a water filter on its journeys even if the purchase is a worthwhile acquisition

Therefore we give you a few tips, how such a tool can be manufactured as makeshift.
self-made water filter Almost all cylindrical bodies are suitable, empty cans or old buckets are favorable. In an emergency it functions also with a beverage can of the edge of way.

Make a hole into the bottom. This hole shouldn't be to large, so that the water doesn't run too fast by your filter.

Cover the hole with a layer of fabric and pour a layer sand over it.

The most important layer follows: grained charcoal from your campfire. This layer should be the thickest. It is responsible for killing the germs. Sand and fabric are for the mechanical cleaning of the water.
Above the charcoal add sand and fabric again. Now you can use your filter.

Fill in the water. Some minutes and you'll get clean and drinkable water out of the hole in the bottom.
A few basic notes about filtering of water:
  • use a chemical filter (e.g. Micropur) on strongly germed water first, especially in the Tropics!
  • never filter hot or sulfurous (smell!) water!
  • remove salt from seawater first!

If you have to filter your water more often you should think about buying a filter.
